Today has been a beautiful day at Nancy School for the deaf. It is also a day that we shall live to remember for a long time. I would like to start by thanking the Minister for Education Mama Janet Katah Museveni and our dear friend Charlene Turner who has come today with a team of 15 people to set up solar light for Nancy School for the Deaf.
I first met Charlene at Entebbe International airport during the COVID-19 time. She was introduced to me by the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health Dr. Diana Atwine and I asked what she was doing in Uganda especially in Jinja and Otino Wa in Northern Uganda. I then asked her in a very humble way to support Nancy School for the Deaf, she committed herself immediately and today she is here to put up solar lighting for the classrooms and dormitories.
Nancy school for the deaf was nearly started 20 years ago with support from a lady called Nancy and the community. I am glad that the Ministry of Education has committed with the efforts of mama to code this school and support it meaning that Government will be taking over the school and running it as one of the Government Schools.
There are over 560 students in this school in both the Primary and Secondary section with the majority of nearly 90% are deaf and a few are not disabled but they chose to be here. It is a boarding school and the absence of light make it very difficult to see one another and to communicate. We have electricity in this school but because the community could not afford and because it wasn’t coded, it has difficult to pay for power as well as pay salaries of the teachers so with this solar lighting, the pupils and students will be able to communicate to one another.
